Text to speech for iPhone that reads anything aloud
TTS Reader is a free iPhone app that reads PDFs, ebooks, documents, scans and web articles aloud with natural voices and highlights every word as it speaks. No account, no ads, and it works offline.
- Free, no subscription
- 31 languages
- Voices run on your iPhone
- Works offline
The current sentence and word are highlighted as they are read, in plain text and in the original PDF layout.
What you can listen to
PDFs, in their layout
Open a PDF and press play. TTS Reader keeps the page as it is and highlights the sentence and word being read. It joins broken lines, removes hyphenation and skips page numbers and running headers.
Books and documents
EPUB, Word (DOCX), ODT, RTF, HTML, plain text and Markdown. Ebooks start at the first chapter, not at the copyright page.
Paper and photos
Scan a printed page with the camera or pick a photo. Text recognition runs on your iPhone, so paper turns into speech in seconds.
Web articles and shared text
Paste a link to listen to an article, or share text and files to TTS Reader from Safari, Files and other apps.
70,000 free classics
Search the Project Gutenberg catalog and start listening to public-domain books right away.
Your pace
Any speed from 0.5× to 3×, optional pauses between words, and modes for learning, bedtime, commuting or skimming.
Natural voices that live on your iPhone
TTS Reader has 25 voices. Ten multilingual voices are built into the app and read 31 languages from the first launch, without internet. Fifteen English voices with US and UK accents are an optional one-time download of about 190 MB. All of them run on the device: nothing you read is sent to a server.
Languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese. The app detects the language of the text and picks a matching voice. The app interface is in English.
Follow along, keep your place
- Word-by-word and sentence highlighting. Tap any sentence to start reading from there.
- Text view dims the rest of the page, which many people with dyslexia, ADHD or tired eyes find easier to follow.
- Lock Screen and Live Activity controls, a mini player, a Continue widget and a Control Center button.
- Listening stats: minutes today, streaks and your week.
Private by design
TTS Reader has no account, no analytics, no ads and no server of its own. Your documents, history and stats stay on your iPhone. The app connects to the internet only when you ask it to: to download a catalog book, open a web link or get the optional voice pack. Details are in the privacy policy.
Questions
Is TTS Reader free?
Yes. TTS Reader is free, with no in-app purchases, no subscription, no ads and no account. Every voice and feature is available right away, and there is no limit on how much you listen.
Does TTS Reader work offline?
Yes. The 10 multilingual voices are built into the app and read without an internet connection from the first launch. The 15 optional English voices need a one-time download of about 190 MB; after that they work offline too.
Can TTS Reader read a PDF aloud?
Yes. Open a PDF and press play: TTS Reader reads it in the original page layout and highlights the current sentence and word. It joins lines into sentences and skips page numbers and running headers.
What can I listen to?
PDF, EPUB, Word (DOCX), ODT, RTF, HTML, plain text and Markdown files, text you paste, web articles from a link, photos and camera scans of printed pages, and about 70,000 free classic books from Project Gutenberg.
Which languages can it read?
TTS Reader reads 31 languages with its built-in voices, including English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish, Polish, Dutch, Russian, Japanese and Korean. It detects the language of the text automatically. The app interface is in English.
Does my text leave my iPhone?
No. The voices run on your iPhone, so documents are never uploaded to read them aloud. TTS Reader has no server, no analytics and no tracking. It goes online only when you ask it to: to download a catalog book, open a web link or download the optional voice pack.
Can I change the reading speed?
Yes, from 0.5× to 3×. You can also add a short pause between words, or pick a ready-made mode such as Learn, Bedtime, Commute or Skim.
Is TTS Reader helpful for dyslexia or ADHD?
Many people with dyslexia or ADHD find it easier to follow a text while listening. TTS Reader highlights each word as it is spoken and can dim the rest of the page so you keep your place. It is a reading aid, not a treatment.
Which iPhones are supported?
TTS Reader needs iOS 26 or later. It is an iPhone app.
Is TTS Reader on Android, Mac or the web?
Not yet. TTS Reader is available for iPhone only.
